The Parable of the Cat<\/span><\/h2>\n
<\/div>\n

One night Adam and I went out
\nto the dog track to play a tourney<\/p>\n

but unfortunately we forgot
\nto follow rule number one, which is<\/p>\n

always, always take separate cars
\nbecause invariably one of you<\/p>\n

busts out in the first couple rounds
\nand one makes the final table,<\/p>\n

and then, to make things worse,
\nabout three blocks from the entrance<\/p>\n

a cat ran right up under the wheel
\nand Adam, a real cat lover,<\/p>\n

had to decide whether to ditch
\nor sideswipe the other car<\/p>\n

but before he could make a decision
\nit was thunk, thunk, dead cat,<\/p>\n

leaving him mentally devastated
\nin a way I hadn\u2019t seen before,<\/p>\n

and we both played like shit
\nand busted out in the first hour<\/p>\n

because we made two bad decisions:
\nthe second was buying in while<\/p>\n

emotionally rattled but the first\u2014
\nwe both said it at once<\/p>\n

as we walked in and ponied up\u2014was
\n\u201cWe shouldn\u2019t have ridden together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Found poem from our realtor’s email, sent when we expressed concern about having seen a \u201cbad omen\u201d at a house. His counterargument was that there are no bad omens, just bad decisions, accidents, and freak occurrences that rattle us, leading to more bad decisions.<\/em><\/p>\n
