Gratitude for a Hell of a Year <\/span><\/h2>\n

Thanks a lot, 2018, for the kick in the teeth
\nfor the lapse in my memory,
\nand for the last day in the life of my mother,
\nfor the end of my consciousness as I presently know it,
\nfor the grief that won\u2019t go away,
\nfor the waiting for the other side
\nof the coin to flip and bring me joy
\nwherever it may find me, for the wallowing
\nin sorrow or laughing at whatever
\nit is I cannot control,
\nand for the crap-fest that life can be
\nbefore it gets better, for the fresh crabmeat we ate
\non the beach while the sun shone, for the Lake Erie
\nwaves coughing into shore, for the beach glass,
\nfor the wind, for the rutted roads of Kenya,
\nfor the Maasai Villages inhabited by the happiest
\npeople in the world, for the huts
\nmade of cow dung and mud,
\nand for the ice cream,
\nand for haircuts, and for manicures, and for my sister,
\nfor my life, thank you for my breath,
\nfor the first gasp of fresh air in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anastasia Vassos<\/strong><\/span> was born in Cleveland, Ohio and currently lives and writes in Boston, Massachusetts, where she writes lots of poems that will never see the light of day, and occasionally something worth something.<\/em><\/p>\n

The year turns like a rusty
\nkey and I am older, older,
\nas the birds flock together to
\nstay warm, all heading in one
\ndirection, out of here and
\ninto the future, where, surely,
\nthe next year and the next will<\/span>
\nseem like ferocious plenitude.<\/span><\/p>\n
