Merce Cunningham\u2019s Late Creations<\/span><\/h2>\n

When he could flex no more
\nhis knees or toes, and his limbs
\nno longer engaged
\nin on-stage expression,<\/p>\n

he performed
\nanother daily exercise, not
\nat the barre as before,
\nbut with paper and pencil,<\/p>\n

doing God\u2019s job,
\nforming his own
\ncreatures, one a day\u2014
\nrhino, titmouse, bonobo\u2014<\/p>\n

birds at their angles of flight, dogs
\nin ecstasies of scent, the
\nlarge and little cats
\nin savannah pajamas,<\/p>\n

striped like a rainbow
\nfrom A to blue,
\nswinging up to Harlem,
\ndown to Soho.<\/p>\n

Sarah White <\/strong><\/span>is a former professor who doesn’t teach French Literature any more but instead divides her time between poetry and painting<\/em>.<\/p>\n
