Suddenly<\/span><\/h2>\n

in a dream that had nothing to do with you,
\nthere you were, satchel slung across your shoulder,
\nthe age you were when I first knew and loved you,
\nin a library, of course, but one we\u2019d never been in\u2014
\nbright with windows, absent any books\u2014
\nbut full of students, and you were talking freely
\nwith them, as you always did, your smile
\nflashing from time to time a genuine joy,
\nand I sat alone, half-hidden by carrel walls,
\nbut stunned to see you because I already knew
\nyou were dead, and I wanted one last time
\nto hear your voice say something kind to me,
\nso I called your name, and again, and again,
\nand at last you turned, ice blue eyes affixed
\non mine, and you never looked away,
\nand you never spoke but stepped instead backwards,
\nbackwards, out of my sight, until the dream
\nwent back to having nothing to do with you,
\nand I forgot I\u2019d even seen you, which, on waking,
\nleft me hollow, quietly staring into the dark.<\/p>\n
