From Canada<\/span><\/h2>\n

Most of my large family are Canadian,
\nburly men who drank beer and curled
\nor played hockey, and comely women,
\nwho were mostly wives and mothers, a
\nstrain of neuroses running through them
\nlike fat marbling a cut of beef, and
\nI\u2019ve often wondered how I came from
\nsuch a clan, with my childhood tormented
\nby bullies, and my later leftist politics
\nand love for poetry, and I conclude that
\nI am born of a moonstruck maiden who
\nleft me as a changeling in the back seat
\nof my parents\u2019 LeSabre, barreling down
\nthe electric highway, dragging the family
\nbehind like a tail, straight into Memphis,
\nwhere I learned not to talk about race or
\nthe heat and humidity, or my love of
\npoetry or the nature\/nurture of my anxiety.<\/p>\n

\n

Corey Mesler<\/strong><\/span> has published 30 books of prose and poetry and appears in many anthologies, which is somewhat uncommon in Memphis, Tennessee, where, with his wife, he runs one of the oldest bookstores in America.<\/em><\/p>\n
