My Brother’s Matins<\/span><\/h2>\n

Most mornings he says thanks
\nfor coffee, fresh jelly donuts,
\nfast food burritos, homemade
\nFrench toast with syrup,
\nbut if I shop at Lucky Seven,
\npurchase him a carton of cheap
\nmenthol cigarettes, he\u2019ll clutch
\nthe laminated box to his naked chest,
\nhurry to the bathroom mirror,
\nreach upward with his free hand
\nto palm the moon-white ceiling
\nwith nicotine-stained fingertips,<\/p>\n

and pray in glossolalia
\nto his reflection, symmetrical as
\nRenaissance sculpture,\u00a0Angelic<\/em>,
\nold nuns and priests would say,
\nwhen he served as altar boy,
\nkindling candles from a taper
\nwith the same grace of flicking
\na lighter red as stained glass.<\/p>\n
