Uncomplaining Poems

Lunchtime Détente

I pretend your rhinestone bracelet
glitters from your wrist and not the floor—
you will gaze at the ceiling
when our waiter hands over my credit card, hesitates before speaking.

Looking Through High School Annuals

Like you, I remember
lustrous black hair—
the beauty school will dye it for free on Tuesday.

At Seven P.M.

Perfumed shrubs
catch fire in the sunset.

Honolulu Help Wanted

Hotel housekeeper needed to scrub carpets and floors
plus occasional kitchen duties—must be
the uncomplaining type.
