The passenger jet
leaves its long broken
contrail straight across
the sky behind as though
it were the dotted line
of the contract
the skywriter will sign.

why on earth he built a house so close
to the railroad tracks up there, and
when he answered, “I grew up on Jerome
Avenue in the Bronx,” he explained everything.
