Hiking Mount Severance

The higher we climbed,
the hastier the sun became,
& the dry, hacking cough
of traffic still reached us
despite our being besieged by trees,
the leaves outlined in gold
& acetylene, & wavering
like the pale-skinned shadows
of half-created things.
